Dyson engineers worked out that hand washing clothes for 15 minutes removed more dirt than two hours in a conventional washing machine. That led to a new type of washing machine - one that had two drums rotating in opposite directions to simulate the manipulation and flexing of hand washing. The new machine was also much more energy-efficient and could take bigger wash loads than normal machines.
The machine used automotive components, had a gearbox to switch drum direction and two motors. It was an expensive machine to make - too expensive. So reluctantly we stopped production.
